How did women's roles in society differ from Athens and Sparta?
The two societies rules are a lot different. Athen woman have very little power, and mainly the men and young boys have more options in life. They are suppose to respect their husbands. Boys are allowed to get an education, and the girls aren't . Woman in Athen "owned" by men and are concidered property. Sparta women have respect from the men. Girls have an education as well as the boys. Women marry later on in their lives, unlike the Athens. Also the women in Sparta take care of the boys until they turn seven so they can go to war for the army. Men in Sparta play very little roles in taking care of the child.
If the Greeks are considered so advanced, so culturally elite, why do you believe gender equality (equality between men and women) was not established? Sparta was very involved in their army. The men didn't care about treating the women the way they should be treated. Most men were not at their homes often, this is because once a man marries a woman the man goes off to war and leaves his new wife behind. The homes end up belonging to the women of the house. The woman clean, cook, and take care of the children and everything inside the house. Men in Sparta go fight while the men in Athen stay at home and boss their wifes around. Gender equality was not established because the women in Athen will not speak up about what they think is right and how the men are treating them. Instead they think they will be protected because they have a roof over their heads and a man beside them. Sparta women have more rights becuase the men are always off in the army.
