Socratic Seminar

Our Socratic Seminar started out with us talking about Socrates and all the great things he has thought of. We talked about the four "cardinal" virtues which are:
  • Prudence (knowledge)
  • Fortitude (bravery/courage)
  • Temperance (moderation)
  • Justice (fairness)

Virtues is a "moral excellence" in greek or a trait valued as being "good."

One of the things Socrates said was "Wrongdoing is a consequence of ignorance". This interested me because I think wrongdoing is in the eye of the beholder. It depends on the person weather something is wrong or not. What may seem bad to me may be something good for other people. For example If a man was starving and he had no home, and he stole food from a farely wealthy guy. This might seem very wrong to the wealthy man but to the starving man it seems good.

I think that we are our own person and no one else can control our actions but ourselves. Even if someone has a knife to your throat you can still choose what happens. You can either sit there or choose to fight back. It is still your action to make. So wrongdoing is up to us. We can do what we think is right and no one can stop us so whats the point in knowing what someone thinks is wrong if we belive that its the right thing to do. That might be a little confuseing. Overall i think this was a really educating socratic seminar.
